       The Institute for Water and Environmental Problems of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IWEP SB RAS), a Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution, was established as the Institute for Water and Environmental Problems of Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (the order of the USSR Council of Ministers of 17.01.1987 92p, the decree of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences 126 of 31.03.1987 and the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences 428 of 20.07.1987).

In line with the decree issued by the Presidium of RAS 262 of 12.2011 the Institute was renamed into the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution Institute for Water and Environmental Problems of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IWEP SB RAS).

In December 2013, IWEP SB RAS was placed under the jurisdiction of the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations (FASO).

The scientific supervision of the Institute is carried out by the Department of Earth Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences jointly with the Presidium of SB RAS, and the scientific research coordination - by the United Scientific Council of SB RAS on Earth Sciences.

The goal and objectives of IWEP SB RAS:

- fundamental and applied research on water and biological resources to obtain and apply new knowledge in environmental protection and rational nature management.

Major fundamental research:

- water resources of Siberia (formation, monitoring and use based on the basin approach; development of scientific bases for environmental protection and nature management with consideration for anthropogenic factors and climate change).
